Orchestra History

In February 1975, James E. Hill, who also served as president and conductor, organized the Holladay Pops Symphony Orchestra and Chorale. The original orchestra group consisted of about 30 members, from many walks of life and ranging in age from high school students to senior citizens.  The chorale had 15 members and was conducted by James C. Peterson.  The orchestra held its first concert on Friday and Saturday, June 13th and 14th.  The choir later dissolved, but the Orchestra continued under the direction of Richard Jackson.  In 1976 the orchestra voted to change its name to Murray Symphony Orchestra.

In subsequent years the group was lead by Robert Lentz and for the last 15 years has been under the direction of maestro Clinton Frohm.  The Murray Symphony Orchestra has performed in many settings in Salt Lake City and the Intermountain area.  In 2000 the group was awarded the Murray Community Art Award, and in 2002 Murray Symphony was featured in a special program in honor of the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics.  Murray Symphony regularly encourages the development of educational opportunities, and the group has worked closely over the years with Young Musicians, Inc. of Evanston, Wyoming.  The orchestra features "Concerto Night", a yearly opportunity for talented local musicians to audition and play concertos with a full orchestra.  Murray Symphony performs at Murray High School, Riverview Junior High, Hillcrest Junior High, and Murray Park, and has rehearsed at both Murray and Cottonwood High schools.  The orchestra is hoping to some day share a permanent home with the other fine performing arts organizations in the city.
